Beginning Open Door Haiti
Open Door Haiti launched under the leadership and vision of Pastor Wiljean Compere in 1993. Eager to spread Christ’s love across the country, Pastor Wiljean has led the ministry in planting thirty churches throughout Haiti. With an innovative and faith-filled determination to meet needs wherever they exist, Open Door Haiti has also evolved into an orphanage, school, and medical clinic. The ministry was officially recognized as a 501c3 non-profit organization in 2009.
After the devastating 2010 earthquake, leaders at Open Door Haiti took swift action to raise funds to launch an orphanage. Within 100 days, $100,000 was raised, and by 2012, a home was built that welcomed in 25 children.
The Orphan Endowment Foundation began partnering with Open Door Haiti in 2012, and we have supported them each year since.
A Growing Movement
Ministry headquarters rest in the village of Bois de Lance, home to 25,000 Haitians, where Open Door Haiti operates its primary school. Enrollment at the school increases yearly, with over 800 students in attendance this past year. Another feature of the ministry is a 24/7 medical clinic. Open to the public, four Haitian doctors see patients at a small fee.
A second wing of the house was opened in 2015, making room for the orphanage to be home to 50 total children. Upon settling into their new home, the children receive their education and healthcare at Open Door Haiti’s primary school and medical clinic. The orphanage’s funding mainly comes from a sponsorship program, in addition to church partners and Orphan Endowment.
